Stolz matched Heiden’s feat from 46 years ago by becoming only the second man to claim the 500 meters and 1,000 meters at the same Olympics, taking the shorter distance on Saturday after announcing his arrival at the Milan Speed Skating Stadium by finishing first in the longer one Wednesday.

American speed skater Jordan Stolz must wait four more years to catch Eric Heiden, but that shouldn't diminish anything he's accomplished at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.

Eric Heiden won three straight world championships heading into the 1980 Olympics. In nine days in February 1980 at Lake Placid, N.Y., Heiden accomplished what no Olympian had ever done -- he won five individual gold medals in a single Olympics, be it Summer or Winter.
