Fernando Mendoza, the mercurial quarterback of No. 1 Indiana, won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, becoming the first Hoosier to win college football's most prestigious award since its inception in 1935.

Heisman Trophy voters must do a better job of recognizing players other than quarterbacks. Texas Tech’s Jacob Rodriguez deserved more votes.

Two years ago Indiana University was 3-9 and had more losses than any college football program in history. At the time, Fernando Mendoza V was struggling his way through his first year as a starter at Cal.
