In South Carolina, parents struggle to deal with infections that have brought quarantines and remote learning. Health care workers are bracing for an increase in cases.

COLUMBIA — In response to a measles outbreak in South Carolina, CVS Pharmacy and Minute Clinic are offering the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine at select locations.

A South Carolina measles outbreak reaches 111 cases in Spartanburg County, with 254 quarantined. Health officials urge vaccination as the best way to prevent spread.

While the new measles case is the first in Connecticut since 2021, there have been more than 1,800 cases of the disease reported nationwide this year, according to data from the International Vaccine Access Center at Johns Hopkins University. That's the most cases in a single year since 1992, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health has reported 15 new measles cases, bringing the total to 129, with most cases in the northern part of the state. Dr. Taras Nebeluk, an infectious disease physician,

Health officials emphasize that the measles vaccine is the most effective protection against the highly infectious virus. Louisiana Department of Health has reported the third confirmed case of measles in the state in 2025.

North Carolina does not currently have any confirmed measles cases, according to the NC Department of Health & Human Services’ website (as of Friday, Dec. 12 afternoon). A measles case was confirmed this summer. Before that, a case was confirmed fall 2024, but there were no reported cases from 2019 to 2023, per NCDHHS.

Measles is spreading to more people and more parts of Utah since an initial outbreak on the Arizona border, with 115 people diagnosed statewide and recent cases confirmed in Davis, Salt Lake and Wasatch counties,
