More than half a billion dollars are at stake for Massachusetts universities, hospitals, and research institutions if federal funding for biomedical research is slashed.

The NIH provided $69.1 million in funding to Nationwide Children's Hospital in the 2024 fiscal year, of which $21.5 million was for indirect research costs, and "only partially covered these expenses," a spokesperson for Nationwide Children's said in a statement.

A federal district judge granted a temporary restraining order Monday, blocking the Trump administration from making drastic cuts to biomedical research funding in 22 states that banded together to sue.
