California drivers are bracing for a double-whammy at the pumps as stricter clean air regulations and an increase in the state’s gas excise tax are set to take effect on July 1, which could send fuel prices soaring.

The average fuel price in the Midwest region slightly declined about 1 cents since last month. According to the EIA, gas prices across the region in the last year have been as low as $2.81 on Dec. 9, 2024, and as high as $3.48 on July 29, 2024.

As summer travel season starts to heat up, drivers are in for a pleasant surprise: gas prices are at their lowest point since 2021.

Gas prices are ticking down in most states, including Oregon. Refineries are cranking out plenty of product for the summer driving season. However, the price of crude oil has climbed above $65 per barrel,
