Two senior Israeli army officers have told The New York Times there is no evidence that Hamas looted UN humanitarian aid in Gaza, undermining a central Israeli justification for severely restricting food deliveries to over two million people and driving the population towards famine.

A State Department spokesperson disputed the findings, saying there is video evidence of Hamas looting aid, but provided no such videos.

U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said in a statement that this was because Hamas’ response to negotiations showed "a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza."

The food shortage in northern Gaza really is dire this time, which spells opportunity for Hamas.

“While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith,” U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff said in a statement via the State Department.
