Two months after Houston Mayor Whitmire set a $70 million goal to combat homelessness, City Housing Director Mike Nicols says they're making progress.

In a city council meeting Tuesday, Mayor John Whitmire addressed immigration enforcement and how it's being handled at a local level.

Whitmire said the Houston Police Department is focused on enforcing state laws. He also said “politicizing” federal deportation efforts “is the worst thing you can do.”

The move comes two weeks after Houston Mayor John Whitmire said most city employees will be required to work in the office full-time starting in February.
