NASA has significantly lowered the risk of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting the Earth in 2032 through recent calculations. The moon however, may not be in the clear.

YR4 is between 40 and 90 meters in diameter, about the size of a large apartment block. The asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered in December last year, is moving towards Earth. A NASA expert has answered all the questions related to Asteroid 2024 YR4 that has been dominating headlines.

NASA announced Monday that the asteroid, named 2024 YR 4, no longer poses a “significant threat” to Earth in 2032 or beyond. “NASA analysis drops asteroid 2024 YR4's impact probability to 0.004%, meaning it is expected to safely pass by Earth in 2032,” NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office posted on X Monday.

New observations of a small asteroid discovered in December have led astronomers to conclude that the chances of it striking Earth are almost zero after earlier data had indicated a higher risk of a collision with this space rock about 130-300 feet (40-90 meters) wide.

The risk that an increasingly ominous asteroid dubbed 2024 YR4 will crash into Earth in seven years now exceeds the the threat once posed by Apophis.

For a brief moment, it looked like asteroid 2024 YR4 had a real shot at hitting Earth in 2032. With its impact probability climbing to a record-breaking 3%, astronomers scrambled to refine its trajectory using some of the most powerful telescopes on the planet.
