Every time a baby is born in Louisiana, where Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson handily won reelection last year, there’s more than a 60% chance taxpayers will finance the birth through Medicaid.

GOP lawmakers are considering a plan to limit federal matching funds for the health insurance program to pay for tax cuts.

Some Republicans expressed doubt that Medicaid cuts are coming. Alternative changes suggested included work requirements and anti-fraud efforts.
