The US Food and Drug Administration plans to phase out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes in the US food supply due to health concerns, Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary announced Tuesday.

Foods that contain petroleum-based dyes are usually ultra-processed and, as a result, they have food labels. These dyes are usually listed on the ingredient label, typically near the end, with names like “Red 40,” “Yellow 5,” or “Blue 1.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it would phase out all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the United States' food supply and medications. The announcement followed a news conference from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on April 22.
