Advanced digital forensics also allegedly linked Eric to a photograph of the stolen coins taken at the Schmitt family condominium in Fort Pierce after identifying metadata and geolocation data.
Schmitt himself has found multiple rare finds, including a haul of coins worth around $300,000 while out with his family in 2013.
A video released from the family shows Eric visibly reacting underwater after finding the gold coins. "It's amazing, it's the reason why you do this," he said.
