France intends to recognize a Palestinian state in September at the United Nations General Assembly, President Emmanuel Macron said in hopes of bringing peace to the region, but the plan drew angry rebukes from Israel and the United States.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday that recognising the State of Palestine before it is established could be counterproductive.

“What he says doesn’t matter,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Macron’s announcement, speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday. “That statement doesn’t carry any weight.”
