NASA has significantly lowered the risk of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting the Earth in 2032 through recent calculations. The moon however, may not be in the clear.

NASA has significantly lowered the risk of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting Earth. Last week, the asteroid had a 3.1% probability of hitting Earth, which set a record level for large space rocks.

NASA announced Monday that the asteroid, named 2024 YR 4, no longer poses a “significant threat” to Earth in 2032 or beyond. “NASA analysis drops asteroid 2024 YR4's impact probability to 0.004%, meaning it is expected to safely pass by Earth in 2032,” NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office posted on X Monday.

The risk that an increasingly ominous asteroid dubbed 2024 YR4 will crash into Earth in seven years now exceeds the the threat once posed by Apophis.

Recently the asteroid 2024 YR4, which is expected to pass Earth in 2032, was calculated to have a 1 in 83 chance of striking our planet. Then a week passed and suddenly there was a new headline: Asteroid 2024 YR4 was now believed to have only a 1 in 43 chance of striking our planet — the highest odds ever recorded for a space rock to hit our planet.

Earth is no longer on a collision course with asteroid 2024 YR4, but it could potentially collide with the Moon.
