Houston is located in the southeast corner of Minnesota. This area escaped the effects of glaciation during the last ice age and is characterized by steep, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys and karst geology characterized by spring fed, cold water trout streams.

The City of Houston, Minnesota, is tucked down in the beautiful Root River Valley, along the National Historic Bluff Country Scenic Byway Hwy 16. Houston is host to many celebrations including the International Festival of Owls, Root River Triathlon, Houston Hoedown,Taste of the Trail, and the Houston Hollidazzle.

Amid the valleys in Bluff Country lies Houston, the eastern trailhead of the Root River State Trail. Whether biking, in-line skating, or cross-country skiing on the trail, or canoeing, tubing, or swimming in the river, the area is teeming with adventure.

Our mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history and culture of Houston, Minnesota and surrounding area. The Houston Area Museum is a newly formed non-profit organization established in January 2023.
