Ruthven Barracks were built between 1719 and 1721 by George I’s government following the Jacobite rising of 1715 to house garrison infantry and enforce the Disarming Act of 1716. They stand on the site of medieval castles of the Comyns and the Gordons, with only the well remaining. Dominating the head of the Spey valley, the barracks could hold about 120 men in two three-storey buildings. Towers at opposite corners housed officers' quarters, a guardroom, prison, bakehouse, and brewhouse. Stables
