Why is that bottle gentian bloom vibrating? Wait for it… there she is! A Common eastern bumble bee visiting bottle gentians in our Madison WI yard this September. Bottle gentian flowers are tightly closed, and have evolved a mutual relationship with bumble bees, especially the huge new queens, for first entry. Only a large bee can initially open the flower and reap the rich nectar and pollen rewards. She emerges with her hair covered with pollen flies to the next flower to share the pollen harve

🐝 Did you know? Bumblebees are the VIP pollinators of the dark blue flowers of closed bottle gentian (Gentiana clausa)! These native blooms stay tightly shut, making it a challenge for most insects—but not for the mighty bumblebee! 💪 With their strength and size, they pry open the petals to reach the nectar and pollen inside. As they bumble their way out and into the next flower, they spread pollen like confetti 🎉—helping nature thrive one bloom at a time. Spotted recently at Brookside Garden

If bottle gentian is the lock, bumble bees are the key! 🔐🐝 Our Natives Expert Greg Christie educates us about bottle gentian in this informative video. These unusual yet stunning plants bloom through November and only open through the vibrations of bumble bees. This native plant can grow quite large, so allow about three feet for bottle gentian to flourish. If you’re looking for a late bloomer for your fall garden, consider bottle gentian. | Siebenthaler's

just a small town bee, buzzin' in a lonely bottle gentian world...don't stop beeeelieving! Talk about workin' hard to get your fill! Bees have to put some muscle into harvesting pollen from this native Iowa wildflower, using their legs to pry the petals apart. Before they embark on another *journey* to the next flower, they have to back straight out of the flower. But alas, they don't go BEEp BEEp. Oh, bee puns. Some will win, some will lose. #IowaWildlife #Pollinators #Bumblebee Video descripti

Bottle gentian (Gentiana andrewsii) is now in bloom! This species gets its name from its flowers, which stay closed up. Only strong bumblebees are able to open the petals to collect pollen. You can watch the process in the video below! Thank you to Alan Anderson for the great footage! #PhenologyFriday | Aldo Leopold Foundation

It is a matter of personal honor for all plant lovers to leave meadow bottle gentian (Gentiana clausa) undisturbed, if only to enjoy the struggle between pollinator and flower. (Besides, blue flowers like these are uncommon in our flora and are often the target of poachers.) The meadow bottle gentian has flowers that never open fully, requiring only the strongest of bumblebees to force their way in for the nectar and pollen. The challenge can be quite amusing to witness, just as the contented bu

Wait for it… Bottle Gentian (Latin name Gentiana andrewsii) is an herbaceous perennial wildflower native to Eastern North America. Its dark blue bottle-shaped blooms are closed at the tips and never actually open, and so continuously resemble flower buds. Only large bees, primarily Bumblebees (Bombus sp.), are strong enough to pry open the corolla to crawl inside to feed on nectar and deposit and collect pollen. Bottle Gentian thrives in moist sites, including moist woods and meadows, along stre
