Before the invention of CGI, the 1948 Superman serial achieved flight effects by using hand-drawn animation cels superimposed over live-action backgrounds. This technique, though visibly dated to modern eyes, was an innovative and practical solution for simulating smooth, fluid flight sequences that were technically impossible to film using live actors and wires at the time.
